The surface is covered with paper mache and the exterior is coated with black lacquer while the interior is coated with red lacquer. The edge of the rim is painted gold. The interior is lined with 12 eye hooks. Cords for the hat lining (ukebari) remain but the lining itself has been lost. A crest once adorned the front of the hat but is no longer present.
