Description

Sommerville: Sardonyx. Ajax, son of Telemon, second only to Achilles in bravery. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case M.

Vermeule: Sardonyx. Cameo. Bust termed that of Ajax left. This bust is copied after a famous marble bust in the Vatican Museum. The marble bust found in Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli is actually a fragment from a statue group probably representing Menealos with the body of Patroklos.
