Sago Eating Bowl

Conical bowl. Coiled construction, carved and painted. Patterns are terracotta, outlined in burnished black. Inside is burnished terracotta/black, with white fingerprints. An eating bowl, for individual portions of sago pudding. Supported by a woven fiber ring when in use.

Four heart-shaped faces, two connected across the center by a three link chain and two near the rim, with opposite orientation. Round eyes, “anchor” noses. The two center faces are flanked by heart shapes resembling playing card spades. The spaces between the faces near the rim are filled with spirals and concentric crescents. Faces, outlines of “spades,” spirals, and other linear elements are textured with punctate dashes. Unusual number of smooth, black, uncarved areas. Design resembles those of 2013-20-1 and 2013-20-32.
