Description | Ornamented calabash bowl. "The Rabinal colors are nothing but black and white. The whole surface is first painted black and varnished. Then the white places are made by cutting and scraping. These calabashes were sent to me from Rabinal; and they are typical of modern Rabinal work. On account of its neatness and polish, Rabinal work is much sought after, bothby natives and foreigners; and the making of ornamental calabashes is a staple trade in Rabinal. ....the work, though done by Indians is corrupt and un-Indian. Probably the black and white couour of it is the only original character left." |
