Description | Large, flat, broad-brimmed circular waterproof rainhat with a small flat-topped crown; the hat consists of 2 layers of open-weave bamboo sandwiching in a 3rd layer of orange paper; the entire exterior of the hat is coated with a reddish-brown wax; under the layer of wax on the crown is yet another layer, possibly of cut cloth, fastened to the crown with thin strips of bamboo woven and braided into a braided finial; an elaborately woven chin strap of red, blue, black and white silk is fastened to either side of the interior with red cloth loops; multi-colored beads with silk tassels are fastened to each side of the chinstrap. A Chinese coin serves as a bolt on the underside of the finial. |
