Description | Rather dark, light weight wood. Head is covered with lizard (?) skin. Hour glass shape. Handle is carved in the round joined to drum at both ends and at two points between. Carved bird's head at each end with open beaks (top one is broken); elongated head and open beak between inner supports. Crude shallow carving of a single motif repeated at around the top and bottom; shows traces of red paint. Attached through two sets (one on each side of the handle) of perforated lugs are long tassels braided and knotted of a raffia-like fiber. Ring holding head on consisted of two relatively stiff strips wrapped with light colored softer fiber. Strip of cane (?) fiber looped through handle. |
