The first constriction of the shaft behind the barbing proper (cut out of the wood) is bounded above by the lower end (unnotched) of a band or collar of carved ornament. There are three zones of carved ornament behind this on the upper part of the shaft. There are 16 barbs, not counting the ornamental barbing behind the collar.
