Description

Sommerville: Onyx. Pilocrate or Philocrates. He is said in time of danger only to have trusted in what surely could not harm him. This gem is one of a series worn by ancient Romans; on which, instead of carrying the effigy of a divinity for their guardian patron, some hero's name was chosen and graven on the amulet. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case QQ.
