Description

Hardwood rod with knobbed lower end and the upper carved in the style of a Bondo mask. To the rod is attached a bunch of raphia fibers, covered with strips of antelope hide. All this conceals a wooden hook tied to the rod. One of the properties of the Kawso Society. The rent is carried by an attendant of the chief dancer; on the hook [or hooks] are hung various small articles [trinkets, etc.]. It is the business of the attendant, while jerking the rent towards the dancer, to convey the articles to him secretly, so that the latter can produce them "magically" from under his voluminous raphia costume and exhibit them to the spectators, who are expected to believe that they were brought to him by the magical agency of the rent. Masks are also concealed under the dancer's robes and brought forth "magically" for exhibition. See 37-22-272, 273.
